The 40-acre work site and exhibition space is about 80 miles southeast of Albuquerque, a few miles from the village of Mountainair, and not far from the ancient ruins of Abo, Quarai and Gran Quivira. The setting is typical of central New Mexico's arid mountain landscape: stands of piņon and juniper encircling a meadow of desert grasses, yucca, and cholla cactus, a sharply rising rocky ridge with a view of the surrounding Manzano Mountains, and a winding arroyo. Mule deer, coyotes and jackrabbits make their homes in the area, as do hawks, owls, crows, piņon jays and juncos.
